Here is a medallion commemorating the 1975 Kernewek Lowender Cornish festival. This was the second such festival which started in 1973. The festival still runs every two years. 2023 was its 50th year.
The Yorke Penninsula is on the South #Australia coast, just east of the capital city, Adelaide. Featured in the centre of the medallion is the a classic Cornish Hughes enginehouse of Moonta mine. Constructed in 1865. It was named after Walter Watson Hughes, the founder of the Moonta Mining Company. The mine operated until 1923.
I particularly like the coat of arms on the other side. It is based on the coat of arms of Cornwall council. I like that it includes an emu on top rather than the Cornish Chough.
Interesting that the Australian festival motto on the coat of arms is in Cornish: “Onen Hag Oll”, where the Cornwall council motto is the English translation of the same phrase, “One and all”.
Finally, it’s worth noting where Cornwall itself is. It is the south-western most point of mainland England. From just west of Plymouth, a line almost straight up denotes the edge of the region. Cornwall is one of the UKs main domestic holiday destinations with beautiful beaches. And of course, Cornish Pasties – and yes, there is a Cornish pasty association… I wonder if they’ve ever made a commemorative medallion….
