About Q
Hi, I’m Q, as in Questioning, Querying, Questing, Quesadilla!
Wait, maybe not that last one, although all this writing *is* making me hungry.
Coin of Note is a personal project to share numismatic information & images of coins or exonumia (tokens, medals / medallions) I enjoy. I love to learn about history & try to include interesting info. I hope you enjoy it! I’m always up for a numismatic chat 🙂
Social media
I started Coin of Note back in May 2018 on Twitter. Then I moved to Mastodon, and now I’ve finally setup this site to accompany it. On social media, I try to regularly participate in some of the daily hashtags like:
- #SaturdayNightCoinShow -A weekly time to encourage everyone to post pictures of coins or anything related to numismatics. “Saturday” is flexible, and no-one is checking the time you post against a clock 🙂
- #MedalMonday – A time to post medals and medallions. Again, “Monday” is an elastic concept.
- #TokenTuesday – All things token!
Coins of the cover image
The cover image of the site features a Postal Numismatic Cover (PNC), an envelope with a stamp and coin on a matching theme – in this case “Doves & Pigeons”. The PNC is covered in a selection of other coins and exonumia. The featured coins and tokens, in rough order are:
- A Japan 4 Mon coin from 1768-9 with a lovely pattern of waves
- A Peru 1/2 Sol 1944, a coin with a beautiful coat of arms
- An ancient Greek coin showing the owl of Athena, which really sparked my interest in ancient Greek coins
- A religious pocket token quoting Mark 10:27: “With GOD, all things are POSSIBLE.”, a medallion from my collection of pieces with bible references
- A Gettone Telefonico telephone token from Italy
- A 1 Falus coin from Morocco, a wonderfully tactile coin (1259 / 1843)
- A Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway check from the USA, an interesting type of industrial token I have become interested in recently
- A 2021 Superb Fruit Dove Tuvalu Dollar (as part of the PNC), a coin and envelope with a lovely design
- A Saint Eligius Medal, a beautiful piece, depicting the patron saint of our hobby
- An 1856 16 Skilling Rigsmønt coin from Denmark, where my family once emigrated from
- A 1984 2 Forint coin from Hungary
- A Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company pass from Australia, a set of passes I gave my first numismatic talk on
Site accessibility
I endeavour to make everything as accessible as possible to people with varying needs:
- I’m using the default WordPress template which is accessible to screen readers such as NVDA.
- Images have alt text with descriptions
- I’ve endeavoured to keep colour contrast well within WCAG AAA guidelines for low vision users
If you do find anything which doesn’t work for you, please reach out and let me know!
